Hello!

chambersandmalone:

Cheers theme on Adventure Time.  I posted about this back when it originally aired and someone clipped it, so I’m sharing.  As a major fan of both shows, and especially the characters in this episode, “Simon and Marcy”, I legit thought my head (and heart) was gonna explode when he started singing this.  Talk about a psychic dart.

The lyrics and how they fit the situation broke my heart. SO MANY TEARS. It was so appropriate on SO MANY LEVELS.

“Sorry, we’re closed.”

20 years ago tonight, One for the Road, Parts 1-3 aired, marking Cheers’ last call.  ”End of an era” is about right, though I still wanna go where everybody knows my name.

This is part of a Bob Costas special that preceded the finale that evening.

this is such a painful otp and bscly the reason I don’t watch shows ever

chambersandmalone:

So anyway, it’s a generally pleasant and benign episode, light-hearted fun.  Woody and Frasier sit down to say their farewells over a few beers and then:
Woody: (clinks Frasier’s glass and looks into his eyes, quietly) Cheers.
Frasier: (pauses, raises his glass) Cheers.

Me: (suddenly fighting hot tears on a treadmill in a room full of people who could never understand)

Modern Family cast members as quoted in an interview uploaded by TV Guide to You Tube, November 4, 2009

“She is absolutely genius.”

— Jesse Tyler Ferguson, as quoted by Justin Ravitz in “All In The Family”, Out Magazine, Sept. 22, 2009

“I really wanna sing Shelley Long’s praises.  I think the first couple of years, Cheers became the hit that it was because— I mean, everyone was good in it, and everyone went on to become brilliant in it—-but I think, uh… I think Shelley and that character hadn’t been seen in a while on TV, and I think she just did an absolute brilliant, brilliant job.”

— Ted Danson, as quoted in “Ted Danson on ‘Crime’ and ‘Death’ After ‘Cheers’”, NPR, Sept. 7, 2009.

“Recently, I caught a first year episode of CHEERS and was reminded all over again of just how brilliant Shelley Long was. Diane Chambers was a role fraught with danger. Without just the perfect actress you could reeeeally hate that character. But Shelley managed to make her likeable and vulnerable and hysterically funny while still keeping the edge and condescension that “Diane” required. Not easy to do. Kinda like walking a tightrope in a typhoon.

It’s been 25 years, there have been a lot of shows since, many with really gifted comediennes, but I’ve never seen anyone better.”

— Cheers writer and producer Ken Levine, “I Love Shelley Long”, By Ken Levine, February 9, 2009

I couldn’t agree more.

Happy Birthday, Shelley!

Happy birthday, perfect woman <3

“It’s an absurd protracted double-gut-punch break-up the likes of which we have never seen. To be honest, we’re still kind of reeling from the whole thing.”

I always sort of hated Norman episodes. For me, my favorite sort of ‘Cheers’ are the ones where everything is sort of clicking the way it is supposed to. I think my favorite ones would be in the romantic comedy years, the first two or three years where the stories were about Sam and Diane. Coach would have a nice little scene, Cliff had some wacky thing and Norm had a little entrance and a teaser. Everything sort of fit into the pegs they were supposed to. When the supporting cast had stories they would always end up having us do something way out of character. It was not quite as cool as the quintessential ‘Cheers’ show.

CHEERSIVERSARY
Hey all, I had the stray thought this morning that this year on 9/30, Cheers will be 30(!) years old.  Don’t you think it’s time for a reunion/special/panel/something?  I tweeted about it earlier on my (largely undiscovered) Twitter feed @SamandDiane, and thought I’d bring it over here for your discussion, hopefully support.
Anyway, maybe if we all started talking about it— blogging, tweeting, etc., something could actually happen and we’d get something kinda awesome out of it.  I’m not an expert campaign starter, but it seems to me that if we all just took a sec here and there a couple times a week amongst all our other stuff and nonsense, we could maybe accomplish something cool.  Seriously, who wouldn’t want to see something like that?  Ted, Shelley, Woody, Kirstie, John, George, Bebe, Kelsey, Rhea, Glen, Les, Jim and the rest together again for whatever?  (I think a really well-done panel discussion or series of discussions would be amazing.)  Wouldn’t it be so worth the teensy amount of effort it would take?
I’ve been tweeting with #cheers30 and will probably do #cheersiversary too, @paleycenter (a good host candidate for a panel/celebration), but if you have any other ideas, I’d love to hear them.

“Thank you all, and thank you cable television, for allowing those of us who eschew the pap and pablum of commercial television to sing, to dance, to write, and to listen to the whispers of our muses, although sometimes the voices of Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia and Urania are too soft to be heard.  Forgive me gals, if I forgot someone.  Thanks to my parents for conceiving and bearing me, although both wanted a boy, locked as were so many of their generation in masculine primacy… Anyhow, where to begin?…”
